A new documentary claims to have solved one of the greatest mysteries of the 21th century: the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of the world's first and most valuable cryptocurrency.

The documentary said Hal Finney and Len Sassaman, both renowned cryptographers, worked together to create bitcoin during the 2008 global financial crisis. Both died years ago.

"Finding Satoshi,"which premieres today, chronicles a four-year investigation by journalist William D. Cohan and private investigator Tyler Maroney into the genesis of bitcoin and its elusive creator.

The identity of bitcoin's creator remains a high-stakes enigma because of the approximately 1.1 million bitcoins Nakamoto "mined" in the digital currency's first year of existence. Despite their value skyrocketing over the years, these tokens have never been moved. Mining is the process through which an array of computers generate random numbers in hopes of finding the right combination to unlock new bitcoins.

Those bitcoins are now worth more than $80 billion, which would make the holder one of the wealthiest people in the world. The theory that the architects of bitcoin are no longer living offers a possible explanation for why such a vast fortune remains dormant.

"I took a lot of comfort from that conclusion, in that otherwise it wouldn't make sense that this fortune had never been touched," said Cohan in an interview.
